While climbing down the ladder at Hitchens’ shaft of the Hingston Down, part of Clitters United Mine, with others he appears to have slipped (possibly from having iron nails in his boots and the staves of the ladder having of iron) and fallen about 15 fathoms from the second ladder from surface, and was fatally injured, dying within one and half hours.
