He and his marrow had taken their tools down the pit preparatory to doing some work at the pumps the next morning. They returned to the shaft and deceased rapped the cage away the onsetter having left. He was not quick enough in getting into the cage, and was caught between the cage and the guide and so severely injured that he died two days later.
