He was taking a tram of props to the pit mouth when an empty tram returning from the screens knocked it off the rails, and twisted the timbers towards and against some railway waggons which were being pushed up by a locomotive. This resulted in the other end of the props crushing him against a pillar supporting the heap stead roof.
