He was kneeling in the gate road sawing a piece of timber when, without any warning, a large piece of stone from the roof fell on him and fractured his spine and leg. The stone which was 13 feet by 4 feet by 2 feet 6 inches thick at one end and thin at the other came away to a concealed slip.
