When they were ascending to the surface in the upcast shaft, the rope broke and the cage fell to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 46 fathoms. A "hedgehog" had been cut out of this, rope two days before the accident, and, although the rope was not much more than a year old, parts of it after the accident appeared completely destroyed by rust. The rope does not appear to have been regularly examined, greased or rehosed. 2 killed.
